
Vaughan Drinkard, Jr. is a native of Mobile, Alabama. He was born in Mobile in 1951, and attended the University Military School. In 1973, he received a Bachelor of Arts from Springhill College. He was one of the founding partners in the law firm of Drinkard & Barber in 1979. His firm merged with The Atchison Firm in January, 2007.
In 1977, Mr. Drinkard received his Juris Doctorate, cum laude, from The Birmingham School of Law. While in law school, Mr. Drinkard received special academic recognition as the outstanding first year law student. Additionally, he served as chancellor of the legal fraternity of Sigma Delta Kappa. While in law school, Mr. Drinkard served as the Law Clerk to the Honorable J. Russell McElroy. Judge McElroy authored the leading treatise in the State of Alabama on evidence.
In addition to having an active law practice, Mr. Drinkard has remained consistently involved in service to the legal community. From 1980 to 1984 he served as a lecturer for the University of South Alabama Continuing Education Division. From 1989 to 1992 he served on the Alabama State Bar’s Unlawful Practices Committee, and in 1991 served as Chairman of that committee. Additionally, Mr. Drinkard is a member of the Alabama Defense Lawyers Association, and from 1992 to 1994 he was a director of that organization. He is also a member of the Defense Research Institute. Mr. Drinkard has also served at various times as a city attorney for various municipalities in Mobile County.
Mr. Drinkard has successfully prepared and tried numerous civil actions during his practice, ranging from automobile accident cases to industrial death actions. Having worked as an insurance defense lawyer for many years, he now concentrates his practice on the direct representation of individual entities and companies. Mr. Drinkard is currently trial counsel for the Board of School Commissioners of Mobile County, the Mobile Area Water Service System and the Mobile County Sheriff, among others.
Mr. Drinkard is a member of the Alabama State Bar, and he is admitted to practice before the United States Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, and all state and federal courts in Alabama. He is also a member of the Mobile Bar Association.
